Transforming a Community Hospital From the Inside Out

IDEO partnered with Newton-Wellesley Hospital to rethink their role in the care landscape locally. With so many top-tier hospital facilities in the vicinity, how might the “community” in community hospital take on a more central role for the organization and the care they deliver?
The first phase of the 9-month project focused on articulating a strong organizational purpose: vision, mission, values, and goals. Next, IDEO teams worked with hospital clinicians and staff to prototype innovations in the patient and employee experience through the lens of human-centered design.

Defining Career Readiness for a new generation of musicians.
In the spring semester of 2016, Berklee College of Music partnered with IDEO to explore the idea of career readiness in two distinct ways. First, we tackled the topic from the inside through a 4-week full-time project, speaking with many Berklee administrators, faculty, staff, and students, as well as gaining inspiration from outside the walls of campus through alumni and employers. The result of this project was a set of student-led insights and briefs to be explored by the students themselves.
These briefs were given to 11 students taking a special version of the Startup Lab class dedicated to exploring career readiness through design thinking, which I co-taught and guided. Our goal through both the class and the project was to develop a shared vision and actionable ideas across the institution to make Berklee not only a world leader in music education, but also a world leader in producing graduates that are ready for the ever-changing employment environment.
